Jackson Pollock’s “Mural on Indian Red Ground” (1950) was purchased by Empress Farah Pahlavi in 1977 for approximately $850,000 as part of her effort to build a world-class modern art collection in Iran. After the revolution in1979, the painting was hidden for decades in the basement of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. The painting was finally displayed again in 2005, and later loaned in 2012 to Japan for a Pollock retrospective. By 2010, its value was estimated at $250 million. Today, “Mural on the Indian Red Ground” remains in the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.
